How Much Government Do We Need?

Our Founders were liberal thinkers for their day. Today, we call them "classical liberals". Our Founders believed that individual well-being, prosperity, and social harmony are fostered by "as much liberty as possible" and "as little government as necessary."

In 1821, when the United States Government was only a fraction of what it is today, Thomas Jefferson said it needed "pruning knife". Imagine what he would think today.

We have provided some historic quotes a informative links for you in an effort to address this question. We welcome your comments.

The multiplication of public offices, increase of expense beyond income, growth and entailment of a public debt, are indications soliciting the employment of the pruning knife.
Thomas Jefferson, letter to Spencer Roane, March 9, 1821

I think we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.
Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Ludlow, September 6, 1824
