The War On Terror - Overview
Peace through strength was President Reagan’s motto but he wasn’t the first president of the United
States to hold this conviction. Thomas Jefferson stated in a letter to James Monroe in 1823, “Whatever
enables us to go to war, secured our peace.” And George Washington himself affirmed this guide when he stated
in his First Annual Message, “To be prepared for war, is one of the most effectual means of preserving
peace.”
As homemakers our first and foremost concern is the safety and happiness of our children. There has been much talk
of peace in the last few years. But as you consider your stand on this issue it is our hope that you will remember
peace of the world is not the same as the Peace of God.
We can not expect to have peace when there are evil men set on destroying us. We will never secure peace by being
nice to our enemies or submitting to terrorists. Evil can not be defeated with kindness. It must be fought with
strength. That doesn’t mean we should overlook kindness, disregard human life or lack concern for others. What it
does mean is that we need to find the wisdom to know when to use force and when to use kindness.
Obviously, the right decision will not me made every time. We are imperfect people living in an imperfect world and
mistakes will be made. But we still must be willing to make the hard choices and confront evil head on. It can’t be
done by somebody else. It won’t be done by someone else. We ARE the last line of defense
Those of our members who use the New Testament as part of their faith will remember the words of Paul, “I have
fought a good afight, I have bfinished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7) Paul did not fight against
men. He fought against Satan who uses men who do his work. Paul didn’t just fight the good fight by spreading the
gospel. He stood up for what was right and against that which he knew to be wrong.
It is not enough to spread goodness in the world, we must also rise up against the evils of it. We must have the
courage to stand up for what is right and challenge what is wrong. The popularity of the event should not be a
factor. Where would be today if our founders had not stood against the evils of their world?
A God of love would not reward some of his children for the brutally murdering others of his children. And yet, all
through the Old Testament we see example after example of God commanded His people to destroy the wicked. In Joshua
we read . “And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the
LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.” (Joshua 10:25)
So how do we know when it is time to pick up the sword? Abraham Lincoln said, “It is my constant prayer that I and
this nation should be on the Lord’s side.” God is only with us when we are with him. In the Old Testament, the
Israelites were only protected when they were following God. If we as citizens will endeavor to be on God’s side,
then no matter of evils will prevail against us as a nation and will receive a peace that will help us know when it
is time for amity and when it is time to pick up the sword.
There will never peace on this earth as long as there are wicked men with evil intent. Instead of seeking the
“Peace” of the world, let us rely on the Peace of God, which is “Peace amidst the storm.”
When it comes to a mother lion protecting her cubs, the enemy must be watched and followed. And if it becomes
apparent that the preservation of God, Freedom & Family is at risk, we must stand for what’s right. The lines
will be drawn and the mother lion will prevail.
