What's With The Name?

By Kimberly Fletcher

In the age of political correctness, it was inevitable that "politically correct" terms would reach women's lives. Several years ago a woman who stayed home with her children was labeled a "Housewife." For some women, the negative connotation associated with this name was not acceptable and many women insisted that they be labeled "Homemaker" as they were not married to a house. In fact, many "Homemakers" may not be married at all.
Over the years we have come to associate the name "Homemaker" with women who do not work outside the home. Some people believe a "Homemaker" is someone who does not earn an income working outside her home or may lack the ability or qualifications to do so. Others believe that a woman must have children or be married in order to be a "Homemaker." We at Homemakers for America, however, know this could not be further from the truth.

Although many "Homemakers" are working outside of the walls of their home, other "Homemakers" are making the decision to leave their prominent, lucrative professions to return home and raise their children. These women are educated, motivated and highly industrious. Some women have come home as telecommuters, while others have started their own small home businesses in the cottage industry.

A Homemaker is someone who is conscientious and proficient, capable of taking on any challenge. While men have the ability to use both sides of their brain, a Homemaker has the ability to utilize all parts of her brain to multi-task many projects at one time. We have a database of time, dates, schedules, and contacts running through our heads on a continuous basis. We make plans, set goals and achieve them. Nothing to us is impossible or unattainable!

We are CEO's, administrators, college students, community volunteers, teachers, business owners and line workers. But first and foremost- we are the caretakers of our homes. Being a homemaker is the one thing that binds us together as women. We should not be afraid of it; we should embrace and celebrate it. We may be a diverse group yet we are all "Homemakers."

"Homemakers" make sure the home functions efficiently. All though we have the support from our spouses and children, it is the women in the home who make it complete.

Homemakers for America is a name that celebrates our diversity, offers us unity, and recognizes our impact on society. We're strong yet tender; courageous yet soft. We are the center of our homes and focus of our society. It is time that we stand together, support each other, and recognize our influence and impact on society.

We ARE Homemakers and "It's Time We Speak Out."
